I’ve recently visited the David Hockney exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. The works on display were familiar – all bright colours, blocks of colour and flowing lines. The interesting thing about these new paintings are that they are all done on iPhones or iPads. I liked seeing the paintings in their original form on iPhones mounted on the gallery walls; like these ones:
Poster sized print-outs of these paintings adorned the walls. We didn’t get to see the iPad ones in situ as it were. But we did get to see animations of the works being produced. Here are photos that give some idea (though very incomplete) about these. There’s much more to it than a few lines and dabs of colour!
There were galleries of wall sized paintings, made up of multiple poster sized prints of different landscapes in England and America. Quite stunning. Amazing images of trees and roads. All different colours. We were taken with the wall sized images from Yosemite National Park. The post cards, like the images themselves, were oversized.
There was a long corridor of portraits of men and women; (Barry Humphreys the only familiar identity); a long video interview with David; a darkened room from the centre of which you viewed four screens showing vision taken from multiple cameras attached to a car, of the same country road in England during the four seasons – Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter. Surprisingly compelling. I liked winter, my companion, Autumn.
The exhibition is at the NGV International in St Kilda Road until 13 March 2017. If you like David Hockney’s work you will enjoy it, so get along to see it.

Didn’t enjoy this show as much as I hoped. It was interesting to see the works being completed – layer upon layer but felt rather detached. Enjoyed the companion exhibition showcasing Victor and Rolf much more.
