It was a dark, and windy night, threatening rain and a distinct chill in the air. I was feeling unwell, didn’t feel like venturing out. Didn’t want to leave my warm and cosy loung-room, discarding my iPad and twitter and word with friends! Least of all to see a film about women preparing for a wedding. I am an old school feminist – weddings are for schmucks! Not fashionable to hold this view at the moment (gay marriage debate etc) but it’s a patriarchal institution, designed to keep women under control, make them subservient, fit them (and men, I am now prepared to admit though I wasn’t in my youth) into stereotypical roles. Remember the poster It starts with his arms around you, and ends with your arms in his sink! Doesn’t anyone think that any more?! Oh well, I do.
And I wasn’t keen to race out to see a film about women getting drunk (though I’ve done my share of that), bitching about each other, vomiting and generally behaving badly.
But my daughter’s suggestion, here we were together alone, a perfect bonding opportunity, take these moments they don’t come along so often (she’s 17). So I went. Out in the wind and rain, over the creek and up the hill to our local cinema.
And I’m so glad I did. Bridesmaids was great. Fantastic performances from everybody. Despite the deeply anti-feminist premise about marriage, it was a film about female friendship and the inherent value of different female ‘types’. They were all great even the mousey wife one, the macho female fight club proponent, the worn out mother of boys So much semen everywhere, and the hostess with the mostest! It was great to see a film where there were only bit parts for for the blokes. I’m pleased the women who starred in it are getting more films.

I was another reluctant attendee, expecting perhaps ‘the hangover’ but with women. Imagine my delight! a film about real fears and friendships where the women are sometimes crass, drunk, fat, confused, jealous and insecure. So many laugh out loud moments in this movie – a great mother-daughter film and one that will certainly shine a light on this current and relentless urge for marriage which seems to afflict so many people these days regardless of poltics, sexuality or gender
