I am sure I will be writing about more churches, but here is our first. After coffee at Cafe Greitfeldt on Michaelplatz, we popped into the church that I assume gives the platz it’s name – St Michaels. What a sight. Vague memories come to me of having seen this all before – how could one forget?! Amazing alter – the sign says an alarm will go off if you step on it! Sacred music was playing in the background which added to the holy atmosphere. The few people looking were all respectfully silent.
According to the signs in the church it’s most notable features are these two very old statues of Mary and Joseph – I especially liked her, very plain and all the more striking for that.
And for this very old, thirteenth century I think, crucifix – also very austere (my new favourite word amongst all this lavish decoration).
I wonder if this knight in armour is Saint Michael. He looks like Don Quixote.
There were some very old, and quite beautiful, frescos on the walls.
According to our Lonely Planet guide this church is most famous for it’s crypt where you can see the coffins of the people rich and powerful enough to be buried there in various states of ruin, revealing bones. But we did not hang around for the tour required to see such gory sights.
