Patema Inverted 3 stars. Sweet animation. About adolescent and not knowing whether you are up or down! Literally. Also about being grounded and finding your feet. The bon mots could go on. Also presented a possible dystopian view of the future of the planet. Although the scientist who wrecked the world were presented as good guts – and the only people who could fix it. Lovely.
Human Capital 4 stars. Rattling good yarn. Good looking people. Exotic setting. Old fashioned film-making. Who’s responsible for the hit and run we see at the beginning of the film? We see the same events leading up to the event from three different perspectives. All brought together in a quite satisfying conclusion. And adds a nice little political coda at the end. Really enjoyable.
Jauja 3 stars. Despite warnings that I would not, I enjoyed this. Vigo Mortensen is a charismatic presence and I could watch him for a long time doing not very much. Which is what happens here. Well he is searching for someone through a very exotic locale – first desert and then a rocky plain. Fantastic landscapes in every sense of the word. A completely unexpected and opaque finale distracted from what had been quite compelling viewing.
