Since my last post we have had a number of memorable meals. First up, back at Gimlet for Eleanor’s birthday – belated, we went on Friday 29 April which was the earliest we could get. Eleanor missed out on our Christmas Eve dinner there – thanks to being identified as a close contact for Covid! So this was a catch-up specially for her. It’s a terrific place if you’re prepared to pay for fantastic surroundings, professional staff and of course, great food.
As is common these days in Melbourne restaurant eating times are pretty constrained. We couldn’t get in until 9.15 so a cocktail beforehand was in order so we popped into Nick & Noras, located in the maze of alleys and places under Nauru House, our old stamping ground. Where we found a beautiful art deco designed room full of young people. Luckily Eleanor had booked for us as there were people waiting to get a seat. We were all quite adventurous with our drinks, but mine was the most spectacular. It was called Passion Project and came looking like this.
I had to burst the bubble by touching it. Great fun! Eleanor had something called a Melon Trap.
After that we hotfooted it to Gimlet. In the rain. Here are Joe and I striding out in anticipation.
Gimlet is great for a sense of occasion. The whole vibe is Welcome, let us help you celebrate. The decor is wonderful – very art deco, tables surrounding a bar, two levels. Waiters in white jackets, one assigned to each table, promising to look after our every need. Just the right balance between friendly and professional. We all started with cocktails – I recommend the Gimlet. Delicious. Here we are at table. We’ve been joined by Patrick and Caitlin – Patrick and Veen are hidden from view.
I didn’t take photos of the food but it was all good. We shared a number of small dishes and had individual main courses. Of the small ones the figs were the standout – crisply caramelised. I had the duck main. I’m not sure how much choice vegetarians get – plenty in the small dishes but less in the mains. But the whole vibe is very responsive so I’m sure you could ask. As usual we enjoyed the wines with the birthday girl choosing. Here she is deep in conversation with the sommelier. We were all very pleased with her choices.
We’ve been here a few times now and the standard remains hight. I’d recommend it for any special occasion.
