We went to Ryne for Mother’s Day. Without Patrick who was in Brisbane. I love having a fine restaurant like Ryne around the corner in walking distance from home it’s at 203 St Georges Road just down from Piedmontes supermarket. We are very lucky. Like lots of Melbourne restaurants post lockdown they have been focussing on fixed or limited menus. Which I think should continue – must reduce the amount of food waste. In any event, as is usual on a special day, they had a fixed Mother’s Day Menu which was terrific.
Starting with Slow Cooked Crayfish, pickled mushroom, celeriac, truffle dressing. Not a great looking dish, would have been better on a dark plate. I asked how long it was slow cooked and it was a shorter period than expected; I think four hours. An interesting dish.
Olive Oil Confit Ora King Salmon, kohlrabi, lemon verbena velouté. Chef Donovan Cook is known for his slow cooked salmon and the fish in this dish was perfection and delicious. Although it confirmed my view that nothing can be done with kohlrabi!
Here I am enjoying my opening cocktail – a lychee martini. Delicious.
The Crispy Skin Berkshire Port Belly black pudding, savoy cabbage, mustard sauce was as delicious, as it looked. So crispy. I loved everything about this especially the black pudding which is the round piece on the plate. I even loved the cabbage!
Duck is always my choice if it’s on the menu. This Slow Roast Dry Aged Muscovy Duck Breast wonton, pine mushroom, lentils was up to speed. Accompanied by duck is t he only time I like lentils. All perfectly cooked but it didn’t need the wonton.
The restaurant is located in a big space that has seen the demise of a number of it’s predecessors. It affects the vibe which can be a bit cold. Although in these days post covid the wide spacing between tables might be an advantage. I like the stressed walls and post industrial feel. Here mother and daughter, close to end of our fine lunch.
The others had room for the Spiced Cassanade autumn fruit compote, quince sorbet but I didn’t and I didn’t even photograph it! Eleanor gave me a beautiful bunch of flowers from the shop run by her friend Emely, TomFool Flowers. You can see that I have enjoyed my lunch in this photo of Joe and I as we leave the restaurant.
And here are the flowers in situ at home. They lasted for over two weeks. Beautiful.
