Rembrandt: True to Life

by Jenny Doran on September 4, 2023 1 Comment

I was unsure about this exhibition which is closing at the NGV on 10 September but I'm very glad I went. It is mostly etchings - over 100 of the 314 prints he made in his lifetime are on display. Many owned by the NGV. It also includes what are described as key paintings from the NGV and on loan from other museums. So, starting with the etchings, … [Read more...] about Rembrandt: True to Life

Books Read June – August 2023

The Evening of the Holiday, Shirley Hazzard This was my last fling with Shirley Hazzard. I didn't like it as much as all of the others that I read which I talk about here. Too slight for me! A man and woman meet in Italy and have an affair - that's all really. I didn't care about either of the characters much. Although the ending was good. … [Read more...] about Books Read June – August 2023

This is an exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ballarat which is on until the 6th of August 2023. We visited on a very wintry 25th of June 2023.I didn't know much about them but there was a very informative short film at the start of the exhibition which was good. Here's a picture of Clarice which greets visitors to the gallery along with a brief overview of her career. Born in Casterton in 1887, died in Beaumaris in 1935 (from pneumonia caught while out painting). From 1919 she lived in Beaumaris … [Read more...] about Atmosphere: Clarice Beckett

Bonnard Designed by India Mahdavi

This is the current Winter Masterpieces Exhibition at the NGV. I visited on the 8th of June and loved it. Closing on until the 8th of October 2023 there is plenty of time to see it and I hope to go again. There was an incredibly hostile review in the Age - an expert decrying the Gallery's efforts to attract the less expert - don't let it put you … [Read more...] about Bonnard Designed by India Mahdavi

Beechworth

by Jenny Doran on June 26, 2023 1 Comment

After four days in Bright in early May 2023 we went to Beechworth for a couple of nights. Travelling through Myrtleford where we wanted to but some wine from the Ferraro Vineyard from which Billy Button sourced the grapes for their Vermentino, Nebbiolo and Barbera wines. We were going to collect a few more bottles but the vignerons were away … [Read more...] about Beechworth
