MIFF 2024 – Favourite Films

by Jenny Doran on November 15, 2024 No Comments

Having finally completed my MIFF 2024 film reviews, here, here and here; and thought about their impact I’m finally able to set down my favourites. They’re listed below – bolded and italicised just to distinguish the titles from each other. There were so many it’s been quite hard to whittle them down from the forty films I saw. Films which took me to Countries – Germany, Norway, India, China, Turkey, America, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Argentina, Amsterdam, the Orkney Islands, Denmark, and imaginary worlds.

Here, in order although I really loved all of them, are my strongly recommended contemporary feature films, of a total of twenty three seen:

Dying; Matthias Glasner

Armand; Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel

All We Imagine As Light; Payal Kapadia

Crossing; Levan Akin

Brief History of a Family; Jianji Lin

Lee; Ellen Kuras

Bob Trevino Likes It; Tracie Laymon

House Of All Seasons; Oh Jung-min

Audrey; Natalie Bailey

Head South; Jonathan Ogilvie

And these are my recommended documentaries, of which I saw ten:

Menu-Plaisirs Les TroisGrois; Frederick Wiseman

Made In England: The Films of Powell And Pressburger; David Hinton

Out of four animations I strongly recommend:

Memoir Of A Snail; Adam Elliot

I‘d recommend all three Restorations / Retrospectives that I saw:

Romulus My Father; Richard Roxborough

The Cars That Ate Paris; Peter Weir

The Back Room; Powell & Pressburger
