Today (19 March) we went to Cimetiere du Pere Lachaise. The cemetery in the heart of Paris. Actually it’s in the East in the 11 arrondissement. But first we had lunch at La Boulangerie. The restaurant owned by the man we met at Les Enfants Rouges. We found it easily enough after walking up Rue de Oberkamph – happening place according to all the travel bibles Joe consults from time to time. It was full of young people and young people shops. A good atmosphere. Lots of diversity as we got towards Boulevarde Menilmontant. La Boulangerie was just near there. The owner was just inside the door and seemed happy to see us. Isn’t that wonderful – being welcomed to a restaurant by the owner in Paris!
He gave us a glass of champagne to celebrate. The place was lovely. Full of locals and a traditional French menu. Joe had the fish soup which was spectacular. I had risotto as the terrine of the day was finished. Then he had pork ribs and I had steak. We had red wine recommended by Nordine which was lovely. The highlight of the meal though was the tart- citron and pamplemousse. Fantastic. We were very pleased we’d been and I was delighted when Nordine agreed to my request for a photo.
From there we went to the cemetery. I’ve decided I don’t like them, regardless of how many famous people are residing within. In minutes I’m complaining like a child. Joe loves the challenge of map-reading.
We did much better with this one in terms of locating the big names. I will let the pictures speak for themselves. There were lots of others wandering around. Many of them young We (Joe) helped an English couple find Sarah Bernhardt and directed a Spanish couple to Maria Callas. The day was lovely. But after an hour I’d had enough although we stayed for two.
Walking back home we stopped at a bar and had a glass of Sancerre and watched the living go by. All very pleasant.
