Like all of Berlin it’s hard to get a feel for the place, it’s all a mish mash. Joe and I went for a walk leaving Clare at Downtown Apartments doing a covid test – she has had cold symptoms for a couple of days. There’s a former crematorium nearby. We think it might be one we saw on a Rick Stein episode set in Berlin. In it he had a meal in an out of use crematorium organised by a group of what he termed ”guerilla chefs”. We asked a couple of fellows coming out of the building whether they knew about that – unsurprisingly they didn’t. The show was years ago. It’s a very pretty building.
We think it’s now a place like the Abbotsford Convent; with studios and rooms for lectures. The two we spoke to were carrying a frame and what looked like design work. Later I saw a fellow with a guitar. It had a lovely garden.
It’s a bit creepy thinking about its previous use. There is in fact a restaurant in the left wing and we walked around to get a coffee but they weren’t open yet.
A walk along the nearby streets led us to this job centre – know nothing about Lina Jo& DY! While I was preparing to take this picture a person in the building was taking a picture of me.
We liked this decorative panel which is on the left of the building.
Especially Joe who likes to think this resemblance is getting stronger by the day.
A streetscape on our way to a local market.
Also a coffee stop at a place which has become a favourite – Soul of Coffee and Kitchen.
And onto the market, which, when we arrived was pretty sparse, cheap clothes and take away food. Although I was able to buy a couple of washers – something I never pack and always want -and needle and thread for Clare.
Another street scene on our way home.
We bought some fruit and vegetables on the way home. Huge apples and one huge and one smaller, odd shaped pear. The apples were floury and the yellow pear not quite ripe but the big pear was especially delicious.
We have discovered that our Airbnb is right next door to Ernst which we are visiting tomorrow. It’s well disguised behind this gritty exterior, especially when graffiti covered iron roller blinds are pulled over the windows.
Home to the apartment to find Clare had tested positive for covid! She was already isolating in her bedroom. Very disappointed she was going to miss Ernst! Not feeling terribly unwell, mostly tiredness and cold symptoms. She took the emergency antivirals we’d brought with us. Our apartment is well designed for this situation – separate bathrooms and a very good airflow when windows and doors are open. Here’s Joe at our front door. We’re on the first floor.
